LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Scotty and I had a weekend of great fun. Two weekends ago we ran the Park City marathon and our legs about fell off afterwards. Well, our legs feel the same after our Labor Day weekend.

Friday- drove to Flaming Gorge/Vernal area and camped. We had gourmet Greek chicken wraps and dutch oven cobbler.

Saturday- had some delicious breakfast to start. Chef Rob cooked up some serious breakfast burritos.

We explored two caves that go back about five miles each through different caverns with ice crystals and lots of crouching and smooshing through small spaces. We climbed on all fours and self-repelled certain places. It was just so darn cool. We invited some BYU friends and were so happy that we have fun friends who will always join us on our adventures (no matter how last minute they sometimes are).

I chopped all my hair off, by the way.

Then we drove (Scott, his roommate Eric, and I) to the trail head of Kings Peak (the tallest peak in Utah).

Sunday- started hiking Kings Peak. We did ten miles to base camp to spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon and wait to see how the weather was going to shape up (the people the day before us couldn't summit because it was hailing and windy). we had gorgeous weather. We didn't see a bit of rain, and we stayed warm at night, crammed in our small tent. On Sunday we read half of "Flush" by Carl Hiaasen out loud. We started it at the Boys Ranch with Dick Jacobsen, but it was so fun to start over again together and read it with Eric. We camped around some beautiful lakes, puddles, and ponds. Scott decided to become the beaver whisperer. We visited their homes and tried to lure them into friendship. Scott, however made the mistake of telling Eric and me about his murderous act o' beaver when he was a cattle rancher in Circleville. I don't think any beaver will ever befriend Scott after hearing about the death of his beaver cousin. Word travels.

Monday- woke up at 4 am to summit. Seven miles up (mostly boulder fields) to the top (drastic elevation shift but it was so fun!), and then we went all 16 miles down. Altogether, we hiked 32 miles (plus the caves the day before).

It was one of those, "Yes. My body wants to fall apart and I love it!" kind of weekends.

Thanks to everyone who joined us in our adventure, especially Eric who made King's Peak so much more fun! And to the Curtis's for letting us borrow their water pump and camp stove. Scott and I have got a running list of camping gear we want to start acquiring. Between birthdays and Christmases to come, we'll slowly get there. Hopefully we'll be fully stocked by the time we have kids to take camping.

It was a wonderful weekend! We had a great adventure! It's a busy week this week (and it was a busy week last week!) We're getting kind of swamped. Last night we got to go to the grand opening for the new OC Tanner retail store. It was such a cool event, mostly just unbelievably cool for my dad. I was so proud of him. What an accomplishment! The renovation went so well. The building is BEAUTIFUL! About the evening itself, eh... we got there at about 6:30, just a half hour after it started, and we stayed nearly till the end. It was really enjoyable! Bob and Dana were there, Gma and Gpa, and Sue and Thayer. Kirst and Nick were baby free for the evening, and there was jazz music and chocolate covered strawberries out on the patio. (there was a dinner too... but the strawberries were just the highlight of my night).

Tonight we have Scott's Court of Honor for Scouts, so I've got to get some stuff ready for that (as well as get organized after our long trip AND take a final some time this week). Tomorrow I'm taking the Young Women to do baptisms. I think Friday's a free day. And Saturday I have a bridal shower for my good friend Lisa. Scott's swamped with work. Hopefully we can use this week to get on top of everything.
